Understanding 16-bit and 24-bit audio, dynamic range and preservation capture.
What is bit depth?
Bit depth describes the number of possible digital levels used to represent each audio sample. It is closely related to the theoretical dynamic range available to the digital representation.
What is 16-bit audio?
16-bit is the standard bit depth associated with CD audio and remains useful for many access and distribution applications.
What is 24-bit audio?
24-bit provides substantially more theoretical levels and dynamic range than 16-bit. IASA recommends at least 24-bit when capturing analogue materials for preservation.
Why does bit depth matter for archives?
Preservation capture aims to represent the source accurately and retain useful information for future work. Higher bit depth can provide greater headroom and reduce the need to make irreversible level decisions at capture.
Should every file be 24-bit?
Not necessarily. The preservation specification should reflect the original material and intended use. Digital originals should generally be retained at their native characteristics.
Bit depth is only one part of the chain
A high bit depth cannot compensate for poor playback, noise introduced by equipment, incorrect alignment or a damaged source. The entire signal chain matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 16-bit enough for archive audio?
IASA recommends at least 24-bit for capturing analogue materials for preservation, although 16-bit remains the CD standard and may be appropriate for access copies.
Does 24-bit make an old tape sound better?
It does not restore lost information, but it provides a higher-resolution digital representation of the signal that is captured.
Does bit depth affect file size?
Yes. Higher bit depth means more data per sample and therefore larger uncompressed files.

Oxford Duplication Centre — Practical Expertise
Audio preservation depends on the original carrier, compatible playback equipment, a controlled signal path and careful quality assurance. The preservation master should retain the best practical representation of the source, with access files created separately.
