What Is a BIN/CUE Disc Image?

Understanding BIN/CUE representations used for optical-disc extraction.

BIN/CUE is a common paired representation in which the BIN file contains disc data and the CUE file describes track layout and related information.

BIN and CUE files

BIN/CUE can retain track-oriented information that may be useful for optical discs where a simple filesystem image is insufficient.

Track layouts

The CUE file should be retained with its corresponding BIN file. Separating the two can make the image difficult to interpret correctly.

Audio discs

For preservation, record the image checksum and retain the original source identifiers.

Mixed-mode media

Access derivatives can be produced from verified source images without altering the preservation copy.

Verification

Check that the image opens correctly and that track layout and expected content are present.

Oxford Duplication Centre: BIN/CUE can therefore be valuable where preserving the disc's track structure is important.
