What information should accompany extracted optical-disc content?
Metadata makes extracted CD and DVD content understandable, traceable and manageable over time.
Useful metadata can include disc identifier, format, source label, extraction date, equipment or software used, output format, file count and checksum.
For audio, record track titles and durations where known. For video, record programme title, duration, format and relevant technical characteristics.
For data discs, preserve volume labels, directory structures and original filenames where possible.
Record exceptions such as unreadable sectors or incomplete recovery.
Metadata should travel with the preservation files rather than remaining only in a paper job sheet.
Reference guidance: This article is informed by optical-media preservation guidance from the U.S. National Archives and the Library of Congress Recommended Formats Statement. Where appropriate, the article distinguishes preservation guidance from practical extraction procedures.
We can assess audio, video and data discs and advise on the most appropriate extraction and preservation approach.
