CD & DVD Preservation Workflow

A professional workflow for extracting audio, video and data from optical discs.

A robust workflow separates source assessment, extraction, verification, preservation and access.

1. Identify the disc

Start by identifying whether the source is audio, data, video, mixed-mode or another structure. Record labels, identifiers and visible condition.

2. Assess condition

Use the least invasive reliable reading method and preserve the original disc without modifying it.

3. Select extraction method

Create a preservation representation appropriate to the source, followed by access derivatives where required.

4. Extract or image

Verify files, tracks or disc images and calculate checksums.

5. Verify

Store descriptive and technical metadata with the outputs and record any exceptions.

Oxford Duplication Centre: This workflow provides a consistent basis for corporate, heritage, archive and family optical-media migration.

Reference guidance: This article is informed by optical-media preservation guidance from the U.S. National Archives and the Library of Congress Recommended Formats Statement. Where appropriate, the article distinguishes preservation guidance from practical extraction procedures.
