What Is Interlaced Video?

Understanding interlaced video and why historic recordings should be handled carefully during digitisation.

Understanding interlaced video and why historic recordings should be handled carefully during digitisation.

What is interlaced video?

Interlaced video divides each frame into fields captured or displayed at different points in time. It was widely used in broadcast and consumer television systems.

What does 576i mean?

576i describes standard-definition video with 576 active vertical lines and interlaced scanning. PAL video systems commonly use this structure.

Why does interlacing matter during digitisation?

The fields contain temporal information. Treating interlaced material incorrectly can introduce combing, motion artefacts or loss of temporal detail.

Should historic PAL video be deinterlaced for preservation?

Not automatically. A preservation capture should retain the characteristics of the source rather than apply irreversible processing simply to make the file look more modern.

What about access copies?

A separate access version can be created with processing appropriate to the playback platform while the preservation master retains source characteristics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should old PAL video always be deinterlaced?

No. Deinterlacing can be an access conversion rather than a preservation step.

What is 576i?

A standard-definition interlaced video format associated with PAL-era systems.

Can interlaced video be stored in FFV1?

Yes. The codec and container can preserve the captured video while retaining appropriate source characteristics.
