What Is Legacy Digital Media?

Understanding obsolete digital carriers and the risks of leaving important information on them.

Understanding obsolete digital carriers and the risks of leaving important information on them.

What is legacy digital media?

Legacy digital media refers to older physical carriers and file environments that may still contain valuable information but depend on ageing hardware, software or formats.

Why is obsolescence a preservation risk?

A perfectly readable disk is of little practical use if no functioning equipment remains to read it. NARA identifies hardware and system obsolescence as major barriers to long-term access.

Examples of legacy media

Examples include floppy disks, ZIP and Jaz cartridges, CDs and DVDs, removable magneto-optical media, older hard drives and obsolete memory cards.

What should organisations do?

Important content should be inventoried, assessed and transferred into managed contemporary storage before the ability to read the original carrier disappears.

What about the original media?

The physical carrier may still have evidential or historical value and can be retained after recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is obsolete media risky?

The media may deteriorate and the equipment needed to read it may become unavailable.

Should businesses recover old floppy disks?

Yes, particularly where they may contain historic business records, designs, databases or other unique information.

Is copying obsolete media a preservation action?

Yes. Migration from vulnerable external media into managed storage is a core part of digital preservation.
