What Is a Mixed-Mode CD?

Understanding CDs that contain both computer data and audio tracks.

Mixed-mode CDs combine computer data with audio tracks. They require different treatment from ordinary audio CDs and ordinary CD-ROMs.

Audio tracks and data tracks

A mixed-mode CD may contain audio tracks alongside a data track. Extracting only the visible files can therefore miss important content.

Track order

Identify every track and record the disc layout before extraction.

Extraction methods

Audio tracks should be extracted as digital audio while data tracks should be preserved as files or an appropriate disc image.

Preserving the complete disc

Retain the relationship between the audio and data portions in the project metadata.

Verification

Check track count, durations, file counts and checksums.

Oxford Duplication Centre: Mixed-mode extraction is a good example of why optical-disc identification should precede copying.

Reference guidance: This article is informed by optical-media preservation guidance from the U.S. National Archives and the Library of Congress Recommended Formats Statement. Where appropriate, the article distinguishes preservation guidance from practical extraction procedures.
