What Is the Revox PR99?
Understanding the Revox PR99 and its role in professional audio tape transfer.
The Revox PR99 is a professional open-reel machine associated with broadcast and studio applications. Its transport, electronics and professional interfaces make it a useful platform for appropriately matched archival transfers.
Why professional audio tape needs specialist digitisation
A reel or cassette does not fully describe an audio recording. Track layout, speed, equalisation, channel configuration, tape formulation and machine alignment all affect the result. Professional transfer therefore begins with identifying how the recording was made.
Condition assessment and tape preparation
Before playback, the tape should be inspected for mould, deformation, shedding, damaged splices, binder problems and other risks. Some tapes require specialist preparation before they can be transferred safely.
The preservation transfer workflow
A typical workflow includes identification, condition assessment, correct machine selection, alignment and calibration, controlled playback, high-resolution PCM capture, file verification, quality control, metadata and creation of access derivatives.
Preservation master and access copy
A high-resolution WAV or Broadcast WAVE master can be retained for preservation while MP3 or other access formats are created for everyday listening. The access copy should not replace the preservation master.
Quality control
Checks should cover the correct source, speed, track selection, channel routing, level, clipping, dropouts, hum, programme duration, file properties, metadata and integrity. Where processing is used for an access copy, the original transfer should remain preserved.
Professional playback equipment
Machines such as Revox, Studer, Otari, Nagra and format-specific digital tape systems can be required depending on the source. The aim is to reproduce the original recording accurately rather than force every tape through one generic machine.
