DVD-RAM: rewritable data storage in a protective cartridge

DVD-RAM was designed for repeated writing and erasing of digital data. Early 2.6GB discs were supplied in protective cartridges, making the format distinct from the familiar DVD discs used in everyday DVD players.

Panasonic model numbers help identify the media type. The LM-DB26 is a 2.6GB Type 2 DVD-RAM cartridge. Cartridge type matters when selecting a compatible drive, so check the exact label before purchasing or attempting to access stored data.

Type 1 and Type 2 DVD-RAM

These early cartridge formats look similar at a glance, but their construction affects how the disc can be handled and which drives can read it.

Sealed cartridge design

Type 1 DVD-RAM media keeps the disc enclosed in its cartridge. The drive must be designed to accept the cartridge itself.

Compatibility matters. Standard DVD drives do not necessarily support early DVD-RAM cartridges. Always check the cartridge type, model number and drive specifications before attempting to read or write the media.

If you have DVD-RAM cartridges and need to confirm the format, availability or compatibility, contact our team with the model number printed on the cartridge. A clear photograph of the front and rear label is helpful.

Please do not assume that every DVD-RAM drive supports every cartridge type. We recommend confirming compatibility before purchasing equipment or handling irreplaceable data.
