Sticky Tape Syndrome affects most professional magnetic tape that was produced from the 1970's, due to a breakdown of the binder that holds the magnetic particles in place.
This is most notable with Ampex 406 and 456 magnetic tapes. The breakdown causes the tapes to squeal when conversion is in place, if transferring of audio continues it can cause serious damage not only to the tape with permanent loss of information but the machinery used due to build up of shedding contaminants on the audio heads.
Our studio is equipped with professional tape baking ovens, that precisely reverses the chemical deterioration using a temperature controlled treatment that will allow a one pass audio conversion without further damage to the tape. Tape baking can take between 6-4 days depending on the reels being baked. ¼” stereo reels may take between 8 hours and 2 days with 2” multitrack reel up to 4 days.
Magnetic audio tape prior to 1970s ‘pro’ formulations and domestic audio reels typically do not require baking due to their binder being more durable.
With all orders that arrive at our studio, we first inspect each tape and assess for tape baking. We will advise the client accordingly as there is a charge that will need to be included with the project costs.

Audio DAT Tapes
Digital Audio Tape (DAT or R-DAT) is a signal recording and playback medium developed by Sony and introduced in 1987. Like most formats of videocassette, a DAT cassette may only be recorded and played in one direction, unlike an analog compact audio cassette.
